Argos > Argos

In July 1973 the 'Green Shield Stamps' catalogue shops we rebranded to Argos. Argos was bought in 1978 by BAT industries and the following year opened its Elizabeth Duke jewellery counter. By 1982 it had become the fourth biggest jewellery retailer in the UK.

Argos customers originally shopped by browsing their catalogue at home or in their stores, but now they can also browse online via their website. If shopping via the website, customers can either have items delivered direct to them or else can reserve them at their local store, where they can pick them up later.

Because Argos keeps its stock behind the counter, with customers browsing catalogues and ordering in front of the counter, they are able to stock much more than if they had a traditional shop. There is also no need for bulky packaging, as products are not on display, so Argos often packages things in bags or simpler packaging. Shoplifting is also greatly reduced this way.
